Many years ago I hit upon the idea of learning to draw by copying Manga characters from Visual Novels. I worked through a few full drawings, shaded greyscale, of characters from Season of Sakura.
I never got much further than that and haven't picked up a pencil since, but i've never lost that yearning to learn to draw, so i've decided to give it another go. This is a rough sketch of Mayuri, from Steins;Gate, first in what I plan to be a series of VN characters. I haven't yet decided whether I will just do rough sketches, or if i'll finish it off, but i'm not too unhappy with it. Main issue with it is the head to body proportion - the body is a bit too small, but given that the body proportion to itself is reasonably good, it's not easy to fix without redrawing the entire thing.
Apologies for the quality of the image, didn't have a scanner handy so it's a photo of a pencil drawing.
Most interesting thing about the Steins;Gate characters has to be the eyes. Not sure that I like them, but they are definitely striking. Not as noticeable without the colour and shading used in the originals.
Comments welcome! Also, any suggestions for taking skills learned in this free-hand drawing from reference material and carrying them over to original work would also be appreciated.
